The 1939 Soviet invasion of Poland
Sun, 17 Sep 2023
Today is the anniversary of the 1939 Soviet invasion of Poland. What followed were: mass executions, mass rapes, mass deportations and, of course, Katyń.
The Soviet occupation of Poland lasted until 1991 (not including the brief period of 1941-1944 when Nazi Germany pushed them out of Poland). The eastern part of Poland (46% of pre-war territory, including the historic cities of Vilnius and Lviv) has been irrevocably lost. Falling into the Eastern Block thwarted economic development for decades.
